As Senior Producer, I concepted this project with the discovery of our '“hero,” Carlos Partee, owner and founder of the Nashville Black Market. From there, I worked in each interview the team conducted to write the script for the documentary, and collaborated with editors in post to make the visual story come to life.

Located in North Nashville, Jefferson Street played a significant role in Nashville’s Civil Rights movement, with Dr. Martin Luther King himself drawing inspiration from the city’s action. In 1957, the construction of Interstate 40 cut right through Jefferson Street, isolating the community and destroying the neighborhood’s vibrant economic and social life.
This documentary explores the story of Jefferson Street in light of the construction of I-40 and Nashville’s expansion. It is a call to inspiration and action on how to preserve the historical identity of the area and foster the future identity of Nashville’s Black community.

Though we won many awards, the most rewarding part of this process was seeing the ripple effects Exit 207 has made in my local community. By bringing awareness to this story, the documentary has started a wave of events, speaking engagements, and business endeavors for Carlos and many others featured in the story. It’s starting conversations, and helping take part in restoring broken communities.
